Those of you who are listeners to TRADITIONS know that quite frequently I play the music of the late----and great---KATE WOLF. She would have been 71 years of age on Jan. 27 this year. I say "of age" because, sadly, she and her wonderful talent left us when she was just 44 years old. I often wonder why people post things saying "happy birthday" on social media in tribute to those who are gone---no more "happy" birthdays for them. Just for us to recall them and their great talent.
Let me tell you how I came to know of and love the music of KATE WOLF. Back in about 1983 I was introduced to her music by a talented songwriter in his own right and realized that he had handed me a gem. A rare gem. Since then I have loved her work. When I started doing some radio broadcasting I always wanted to feature some of her artistry. Some years ago I had the pleasure of interviewing her children on the program. It was a delight and also a wonderful moment to hear about her history and how they are keeping her music alive and remembered. You can find out more about her and her amazing story on the following website www.katewolf.com .
Aside from all the wonderful recordings and live music she gave us here are a few little sidelights:
Give Yourself To Love---a song written for a wedding of a friend of hers but, frankly, is also quite appropriate for funerals. I know some friends you have used it for that sad moment.
Emma Rose----A wonderful story that is based, according to Kate Wolf, on a true incident. Makes sense to me.
Peaceful Easy Feeling----This is a Jack Tempchin composition that was a huge hit for The Eagles. Me; Just listen to Kate Wolf do it and there is no other.
Cornflower Blue---Just a beautiful piece of work and after her sad passing a wonderful tribute to her using the title of that song by Eric Bogle. If you are a listener to TRADITIONS on the weeks I am on you will have heard that many times.
We could continue with an entire ---as it is said in aYiddishkeit--Megillah of her great work. We won't. Just let us sample a few thanks to modern technology where where everything lives forever---would that Kate Wolf had. Afterwards check out some other notes of interest.
Granted these are not the songs mentioned above but they are some moving samples of that great plaintive voice and talent. As to Weaver of Visions---the line in that last song---do go get that album of her music. A wonderful 2 disc set of her most memorable music.
Some other notes now:
Since I was not on TRADITIONS on Jan. 27 I was not able to do this commemoration. I do hope you will allow this to be my commemoration and learn more about this great talent and remember and appreciate it.
OK. More practical matters now. You may know that the annual fundraising event---surely not a gala for yours truly---for WFDU arrives on 2/1. Honestly now---3 weeks is not all that long on an annual basis. Think about the other alleged "community" stations. Is it ever that short--No. Is it ever that infrequent---No. Truly---this is the right place on the left side of the now defunct dial. Eclectic programming that is what radio used to be about is still alive and well on WFDU---your support is needed for this very brief time. Take a break from the incessant pledge drives currently in progress and just enjoy some music and comments from people who devote their time to this station---and support them.
A few other items----SUNDAY SIMCHA. Yes, it is fund raising time. I will still be having a conversation with the filmmaker of KOCH---all about the mayor. A fascinating film. Later this month I will have the filmmaker of HAVA NAGILA, THE MOVIE on the program. As the slogan says---WFDU---Keeping Yiddishkeit on The Air
As to TRADITIONS---some wonderful guests and, more importantly, some great music and commentary follow after our fundraising month. The joke there is that the commentary during fundraising is not all that witty---though, it could be. Let us know.

SOME BRAIN DROPPINGS WHICH ARE, SURELY, BETTER THAN BIRD DROPPINGS
Then again they they may not be. Don't you believe that if the Bluebird of Happiness craps on your head that it is a good thing? Brain Droppings are not all that good compared to the leavings of that little fellow.
Let's start with some of the serious stuff. I was delighted to see that NY State (under Gov. Cuomo ) passed the most stringent gun control laws in the nation. Even that has its problems but it is, at least, a start to rid this nation of totally unnecessary weaponry. Of course there are factions that are upset. One of them being people from the Mental Health community and then, of course, the usual suspects. I don't know if the law puts penalties on people who own guns and do not keep them securely locked at home (especially if they have a ,mentally dysfunctional person in the home---think of Lanza of CT). While I do have issues with invasion of privacy I certainly do not have any about people with guns. A pistol with a permit because you are in a dangerous profession, carry valuables with you, etc; seems rational. Assault weaponry does not. Unless, of course, you are a member of a Seal Team and there are not all that many.
It seems that Google just does not get anything right other than "search". Though they do have ownership of some really popular websites. Facebook has not got anything right other than annoying users and disappointing investors (i.e. gamblers). They do have one thing that could pull them out of that slump. Search. May well be the best way for them to go---since they have now gotten into every user's privacy why not capitalize on it?
The world and the technology changes. I could not abide more than 30 min. of the Golden Globe Awards since after each award there were myriad commercials. Some folks I know just recorded on DVR and bypassed the commercials. Smart move---now, all they were left with were the nonsensical and meaningless moments of a ceremony that was only important to the participants. One has to wonder why Corps. are so willing to pay big bucks for commercials that most people can now avoid.
By the way----did anyone really give a damn about Jody Foster and her sexuality or her speech? I read about it. Thankfully Family Guy was my escape mechanism. Fear not Seth McFarlane---it will be the same at Oscar time for me.
Back now to a serious moment. Thinking back to The Holocaust and to the tragic years of Slavery in this country one has to ask why it is that now the tragic events in India (rape and murder), the brutalization of so many in various nations is now on our front burner when it never was before. It is a good thing. Perhaps we have learned some hard lessons. One other question now. The Congress (some members) question the need for the financial help to the areas in the North East that were savaged by the Hurricane (Sandy) because of our debt issues. They see no issues in aid to foreign nations. What is wrong with that picture.?
I am glad that the idea of coining a Trillion Dollar coin is off the table. With my luck I would have gotten in change and then dropped into a vending machine.
Time now to mention a few upcoming musical and radio program moments. I do hope you will be tuned in to Sunday Simcha (10 A M ET) and to Traditions this Sunday (3 P M ET) or on the web www.wfdu.fm . We commemorate Martin Luther King on both programs. Some selections will surprise you. On Traditions you will hear what is to me the most moving "Abraham Martin & John". The artist will surprise you. If you have an idea of who it might be just e mail me before the show airs and you will get a WFDU bumper sticker---quite a thrill is it not. The e mail address---wfdutraditions@yahoo.com Hope to have you listening that day---after all---RADIO---the theater of the mind and, unlike TV, you bring your own images to what you are hearing. The best part---NO COMMERCIALS at the Right Place On The Left Side OF The Dial. Do you you still have a dial? If you do then you probably have a rotary phone so---just hang on until someone gets to you. Best to listen to Sunday SImcha and listen for the answer from David Buskin (Modern Man) on Hotline.

NOBODY ASKED ME BUT....
A bit belated and not the usual column(blog) but, given the title we do have to flip the fedora as always to JIMMY CANNON for those who may wonder from whence came this title. I will save you Googling (now a verb). A long ago wonderful columnist for the NY Post (when it was still a newspaper and not a wrap for deceased fish.
These may well be New Year's Resolutions combined with personal thoughts of behavior for others--
Nobody Asked Me But......
1) I must make efforts to be less judgmental amongst people I do not agree with
2) It would be nice if people showed the courtesy I do (I believe I do) on the Tennis Courts when people we all know are waiting to play.
3) Does having a conversation seem so disruptive to people on a tennis court? Seems to me that conversation is part of the social interaction with people that are not the Pros they think they are.
4) I do have to relate the opinion that WFDU is the RIGHT place on the left side of the dial given the wonderful eclectic weekend sound of the station. Admittedly, I am part of that but I refer you to the show that follows Sunday Simcha. Not to be missed. In the center of dial one does find WNYC and NPR but, honestly, their programs are not in competition to WFDU's in the time slots I speak of---cannot think of a slogan for the right place on the left and center of the now non existent dials.
5) One does have to wonder about the over-use of some of these cliches in interviews. Does nothing ever happen in daytime? Only at "...the end of the day.." And never let us forget the ever wonderful "...Having said that..." (You said it---we know). Many times Punditry = Bullshit.
6) In hindsight I now feel a bit sorry that I gave up doing TABLETALK. Hearing Alec Baldwin doing almost the same program (albeit with bigger names) I realize how many wonderful guests I had on the program over the years. Given the size of this station and my own lack of fame we did end up with some great guests and some great conversations. I thank them again for the honor of their presence.
7) My annual year end (beginning) thanks to WFDU for the opportunity to still present what once was called Free Form Radio and for keeping --as the bumper sticker says---Yiddishkeit on the Air and, certainly, the ongoing tradition of TRADITIONS. My thanks, again (or is it "At the end of the day"to my co-host on Traditions(Ron Olesko) for introducing me some 20 yrs back to the station. And thanks to the Program Director who seems to use the same tailor I do.

Holiday Happiness--defined and commented on.
While the Grinch is not my hero I do have to say that there has to be some respite from all this forced happiness, gayety, and celebration. A few thoughts on that subject and, perhaps, some comparisons of the various holidays we insist on celebrating.
The main event, as the boxing folks say, is Christmas. What a joy. I, too, as a youngster fell into the mood---and I am not Christian---but, oh those carols, those trees, that shopping (damn, I could have had 8 gifts for Channukah), and all that constant cloying moments of alleged magical musical moments. Are we not overloaded with Andy Williams and that ilk by now?
To other holidays now--before we return to that miracle in a manger because the hotel was booked--
Channukah---I am killing my image here as host of a Jewish radio program. We celebrate revolutionaries and the mayhem that encompassed---not peace. The miracle of the oil ---lots of interpretations there but let us just leave it as so much that all those latkes could be cooked. Or, in contemporary terms the miracle would be one again gasoline (oil) at .35 /gal.
Kwanzaa---I am no expert to comment on that subject other than to say it is a late entry into the mass that encompasses they cashing in of the Christmas season---not the spirit---the season is for merchandising
.
Christmas---The basis for all this joy and celebration. is something I should not comment on but, suffice it to say, that Easter is the memorable occasion for the true believers. Christmas, now that I am not a kid anymore, is truly an artificial holiday created for merchandising. Snow---only in this area. Yet, Christmas does happen in the Middle East (and all over the world). The actual birthday of the baby Jesus is up for grabs. Though I did hear on a radio program recently a lovely tale about a pregnant lady who was upset about that and a stranger offered to take her to wherever she need to go but they ended up not finding a hotel ---she gave birth and this kind man signed up as the father to the available authorities.
Perhaps some music to celebrate the holiday season now---

THURSDAY & ANOTHER EDITION OF----
a flip of the fedora as always to JIMMY CANNON
NOBODY
ASKED ME BUT.......
1
As
the year draws to an end this Sunday will be my last program on TRADITIONS for
this year and I will be featuring---along with the regular features and the
wonderful new material---some of the recordings that truly got to me this
year. Not a TOP10 just a summary of some
that impressed me for various reasons.
If you have others in mind please do contact me and let me know and I
will surely play them with your comments next time I am on the WFDU
airwaves---or, now, their worldwide stream.
Damn, they have to contact a good Urologist about that.
2
I
hope that you will be joining me once again on January 5 when my guest will be
Mara Levine and we will play from her newest recording and talk about that and
her career.
3
The
Pope is now using Twitter---what a thrill.
I don’t since I do believe that it is the area limited to birds for
communication. Are we not more nuanced
than the birds?
4
This
is a good point to announce some of the future plans for both TRADITIONS AND SUNDAY SIMCHA. On January 5 I am planning to have Mara
Levine join me to talk about her career and play music for her latest
recording---such a beautiful voice. That will be on TRADITIONS. SUNDAY SIMCHA will featuring some your
requests for the more traditional material as the years progresses and will
also be adding some “newish” material---strange you don’t look newish---but you
will assimilate and enjoy the program.
Alavei!.
5
I
do want to make mention if the radio station that is truly---THE RIGHT PLACE ON
THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DIAL.
Actually, if you still have a dial---on the whole damned thing. WFDU.
Where else would or do you get the eclectic programming you get here---especially on the
weekends. OK I am partial. Where else do the hosts get the liberty of
programming what they believe is what the their audience wants---not what
“suits” say they want. It is radio as is should be. Not, like some alleged community/public
stations say they are. This is really
“free form” radio at its best. Radio you
can relate with. As was said, recently,
by one of the staff members, “...a companion to those who are in need of
company and a port in a lonely storm...”.
It is the best that radio offers.
Even more than TV. It is
personal.
6
For this year then---may your next year be
what you hope it will be.

THURSDAY---another Edition of NOBODY ASKED ME BUT.....
The usual tip of the fedora to Jimmy Cannon----
NOBODY
ASKED ME BUT.......
1) How many times do you get to see a terrific
concert at no cost? Forget the $100
plus tickets at the arenas. Come over to
the Orangeburg Library (call for reservation—845 359-2244---FREE) on Sunday 12/2 at 2
PM. Do get there at 1 PM to view this multifaceted
artist’s art work. I speak of
CHRISTOPHER BROWN---Not Chris Brown----Rock’s problem.
2) Facebook might turn out to be the
psychotherapy out there and it is free (except for the annoying ads). Some people truly get their professional
information out there---and then there are the folks who post everything from
their shopping list to their bowel movements.
They are truly being helped by this medium since a “shrink” would charge
an exorbitant amount to have them vent and accomplish “zilch”. It may well be that Facebook will be the
downfall of the pontificating and pointless purveyors “pap” at exorbitant
rates. Shakespeare said it best (as
always) about these purveyors of panacea ----“...signifying nothing..” OK, it is the last line of a longer speech
talking of something else yet does apply here---just forget the “ sound and
fury part” which was not mentioned here.
3) An amazing array of wonderful new material
always arrives at this time of year for air on both Sunday Simcha and
Traditions. Let me just give you a few
items that might work for gift giving time---
For
SUNDAY SIMCHA Fans---
a)
The
Idelsohn Society---anything at all with special attention to Twas The Night Before Hannukah (2 CD set)—also
their Black Sabbath recording of African American Artists doing Jewish Music
b)
Susan
Colin and Joy Katzen Guthrie and any of their recordings. Two cantorial charmers of wonderful vocal
delivery
For TRADITIONS Fans---
a)
Kim
& Reggie Harris ---Resurrection Day
b)
Anne Hills---The Things I Notice Now
(Tribute to Tom Paxton)
c)
Suzie
Brown—Heartstrings (for the Prine cover song there)
d)
Iris
Dement---Sings the Delta---because she is Iris Dement
e)
Tune
in and find even more items of note.
4)
December
16 will be my last show for this year.
Ron Olesko will be doing the others for Christmas and New Years and I
return on January 5 with my special guest.
Mara Levine. She will be
debuting her new album and we shall have an interesting conversation about her
and her new CD. I will, on the last show
of the year for me, try to select some of the most meaningful music I have
played this year---it could be new, it could be classic, and mainly it will be
meaningful to me and, I hope, to you as well.
5)
It
is amazing how nothing dies on the internet.
I just rcvd. a request for a copy of an interview I did with THEODORE
back in 1998 or so and it was mentioned in the, now defunct, THE ALMOST DAILY
ROOSTER in 2008. The answer was “..not
available..” This brings up the
question---do you ever die on the internet even if you have left this world in
the true sense?
6)
I
wonder how the younger generation(s) can envision life without all the instant
communication of today’s world. Probably
as I cannot envision the days prior to automobiles and telephones (I am not
that old). Still, think of a few
things. Does this immediacy of
communication really make things better?
Was not, say diplomacy amongst nations, better when there was more time
for thought? Were kids not better off
making up their own games and fun? Did
it not make it more worthwhile to do research instead of a quick one liner from
a search engine (truth in commentary---that is still magic to me and
amazing)? Well, now the next line---“...get the hell off my
lawn...”
7)
As
we get to the end of the year I do want to thank all the listeners for their
interest and support of SUNDAY SIMCHA & TRADITIONS. I also want to thank so many of you who have
made SUNDAY SIMCHA such a part of your Sunday routine. And, I do not serve bagels and/or
coffee.
8)
I
am not a diplomat but I do have to wonder about the semantics of the U N
resolution granting non-member status to Palestine. Perhaps the person who stated that words are
powerful things has it right then. A
State in words only. Then again, let us
recall the British and the Balfour Declaration which talked of Palestine as a Jewish state (Home—to be
exact). Hmmmm!!!!!
