NOBODY ASKED ME BUT..
1) Sad to say but with all the weather forecasting and all the punditry from the news folks who stay up around the clock looking fresh as daisies and pontificating ad nauseum the worst areas were not the ones mentioned as the targets. So much for wasted punditry and pontificating pomposity ---sort of like old Will Shakespeare said years back---“....signifying nothing...”. He did mention sound and fury—so I guess that ties into Hurricanes

2) You know is age is creeping up ( or is there) when the local cemetery has more of your neighborhood than the one you reside is does now.

3) Would it not be nice to have Funeral (Memorial) rehearsals like wedding rehearsals so the not-yet deceased can enjoy the festivities and not miss them.

4) I know who either of the 2 I hope win the U S Tennis Open---and the 3d loses. Do you think you know?

5) Sunday Simcha is now in its 6th Year on WFDU (Sundays 10 AM ET) and WFDU has to be commended for “...keeping Yiddishkeit on the air...”---think we need a bumper sticker like that?

6) Gilbert & Sullivan have it right---“...you must stir it and stump it and blow your own trumpet or trust me you haven’t a chance...(Ruddigore).

1) Seem like Social Networking and computers do bring out the “creativity” that most folks had to keep suppressed for years. For better or for worse. And correction fluid is not needed---just a steady hand before you hit “send”.


2) Sometimes the best films do not get to your local theater---case in point---“Queen To Play”. A bit formulaic but still enjoyable and Kevin Kline speaking fluent French—amazing talent. It is on DVD---however long that format will last in this era of constant change.


3) The Earthquake was truly devastating---imagine having a lawn chair keel over. Don’t mention this to Haitians.


4) My sincere compliments on the recognition this Sunday to Si Kahn at the Borderline Folk Club picnic that features so many great artists and, of course, Si Kahn. My honor is to be able to introduce him---and I do hope to see you there. The event takes place in New City, NY and the website to check is www.borderlinefolkmusic.4themax.com


5) So many maniacal dictators and so few who want to leave the stage rapidly. You have to say this for dear old Adolf---he knew when it was over---and he took his girl friend with him---Qadafi—hangs on, Assad---hangs on, and, unfortunately, Amin lived out his years in luxury as a few other did as well.


6) What would the population do without the paternalism of Mayor Bloomberg---what do eat, what to wear, what to do in emergencies---nobody has to think for themselves anymore at all.

1) You will not want to miss this week’s TRADITIONS (http://www.wfdu.fm/) as we start with music from Si Kahn and the artists that will be honoring him on 8/28 in New City, NY and then welcome the wonderful HUNGRYTOWN group into the studio for some conversation and live music.

2) Have you ever noticed that Broadsheets (NY Times, Washington Post, etc;) write in depth articles that may continue for on other pages and the tabloids make sure that each piece ends on the same page. That surely must tell one something about quality and intellect.

3) It does seem incongruous that municipalities are limited to minute financial support from the State, that workers are taking cut-backs, and everyone is belt tightening and The Port Authority (with its highly paid execs) plans to increase fees by over 50%. The new definition of greed and obscenity.

4) You have to admire the “chutzpah” of the politicos---let the board you appoint threaten 50% increases in tolls and then ride in on your stalwart stallion and insist on a lower increase as if that was not the plan all along. Also—why have public (stacked) hearings where the board does not appear but, rather, sends a stenographer.

5) Sometimes the old films are still the best---The Third Man, to me, is still the classic of its genre---and Orson Welles with just a bit of screen time in it still seems like the overshadowing force—pun intended.

1) You will not want to miss this week’s Sunday Simcha as we debut the new CD from The Klezmatics commemorating their 25th year together---or from their founding and evolution. A truly wonderful and enjoyable piece of work.

2) Sad to hear of the events in Britain. Civilized response to uncivilized people who have not a cause, other than looting, is a difficult thing. A cause has a purpose—in this case real bullets might also—would the Brits were a bit more realistic.

3) It does take a certain amount of talent to be as bland as Alex Treback---and it really pays a handsome salary---a lot more than the prizes on Jeopardy. Great show that should last forever---as opposed to the inanity of the “yahoos” (ala Reality TV) on Wheel of Fortune.

4) Reality TV is the sad state that original 7 or so outlets that have evolved into. hundreds of more outlets---worse content. Some kind of ratio there.

5) Frankly, Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.---Words to live by.

6) More words to live by are those that say it is better to have a good doctor than a friendly one---but if he or she is both---all the better.  Lucky me on at least 2 counts.

1) You will not want to miss this week’s TRADITIONS program---a most brilliant guest (find out for yourself) and some story songs to bring a tear to your eye---think War Horse.


2) If you are innocent until proven guilty does being put in a cage while in a hospital bed make you wonder how fair is Egyptian justice?


3) Ending the Mubarack comments one does have to say that he was a politician and was an ally to the West (and a recipient of our hard to afford foreign aid). Internally---well, another issue.


4) What a delight to stand by the banks of the Hudson River and smell the gentle falling rain.


5) What a clever line from Pres. Obama on his 50th Birthday Celebration---“....tomorrow I will get a letter from AARP asking me to write to the Pres. to ask him to protect Medicare...”(paraphrase).


6) No double dip recession for me I am switching to double dip coffee ice cream cones—much richer and more comforting.

1) You will not want to miss the August 7 TRADITIONS program on WFDU when my guest is the most amazing talent and conversationalist you will find in many a moon. Her name---well, listen to the show.

2) How many of us of a certain age recall places like Lafayette Electronics where you could purchase replacement parts for items? Even the late lamented Circuit City sold open box items to be used as replacement parts. No way today---Target had all kinds of broken floor samples and would not part with one---that is the policy---sure---buy a new unit when they will be throwing out their junk anyway.

3) On the lighter side one has to wonder why a store like Best Buy (and is it really) has a whole section devoted to a particular item for demonstration and each and every one has a dead battery so you cannot demo it. Sounds like a great PR plan to me. Hope for the best.

4) Is it possible that all religions are peopled buy folks that can interpret the will of whatever deity they believe in--- Jews interpret laws to satisfy their benefits, Catholics as well---and, I suppose, they all do that. So, if there really is this omnipresent divinity who or which is all knowing---how does a mere mortal decide what that entity is deciding. Does not seem Kosher---or Halal—or whatever .

5) There seem to be some sort of inverse ratio to the amount of TV channels that are available and the dearth of any decent content. When there were just about 7 or so channels you really had quality---you recall the stone age of TV.

6) California was thinking of banning circumcision and if the law were to pass violating it would be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine if $1,000. Wow---that is one expensive cut of meat---the courts threw out the ballot proposition.

7) If I raise my own debt ceiling it seems like a good idea to also lower the payment floor.

8) If one pays in to Social Security and Medicare and then collects on it when the time comes I do believe that is not a “governmental handout”. It is a social contract bought and paid for. The tax loopholes for the wealthy, the corporations, the medical insurance and non-contributory pensions (and all the paid vacation time and junket time) for the allegedly hard working politicos is a governmental handout. Time to get the facts straight.
